School placement for global families

From confused to confident: find the right school for your child.

Top School and Uni helps globally mobile families select UK schools, prepare for 11+, 13+ or 16+ entry, relocating from overseas, moving from home education, or navigating a non-traditional education journey.

A bespoke school search

The right school is not just about reputation. It is about fit.

This programme is bespoke and can be used when searching for schools at any age. We provide a seamless service from early years to sixth form and beyond, supporting families at critical moments in their child’s education.

Whether your child needs help preparing for entry at 11+, 13+ or 16+, you are looking locally, planning a move, considering boarding, or entering the UK system from overseas, we will guide you towards a well-informed decision about where to apply.

We work particularly well with internationally mobile families, home-educated students, world-schooled learners, young athletes, actors and children whose educational story does not fit neatly into one standard school route, but with the right strategy, it can still be presented clearly and confidently.

Common questions

School search can feel overwhelming when you do not know what to look for.

School tours, application lists, open days, league tables and admissions deadlines can quickly become confusing. We help families ask better questions and understand what each school is really offering.

Which school is best for my child?

We help you move beyond reputation and understand which schools are likely to suit your child academically, socially and emotionally.

How can I tell if my child will thrive?

We look at school ethos, pastoral care, academic expectations, boarding culture, co-curricular life and the personality of your child.

When do we need to apply?

Application dates are often much earlier than families expect. We help you understand deadlines, entry points and preparation timelines.

What does the school want?

We help families understand assessment requirements, interview expectations, scholarship routes and what makes a strong application.

How do we explain a non-traditional route?

Home education, world schooling, elite sport, acting and international moves can all be explained well with the right academic evidence and presentation.

What support will my child need?

We can advise on academic assessment, tuition, mentoring, interview preparation and confidence-building before entry.

Recent school success

Families come to us when they need clarity, confidence and a plan.

We know that a school search is highly personal and one of the biggest decisions you will make for your child at this stage in their life. Our role is to help you understand the options and make a confident decision that suits your child and your family.

“Top School and Uni helped us to find the right school for our child, Harlow, and guided us on what to do next. Next, we will be back for her brother.”

Every stage of school entry

A school placement pathway from nursery to sixth form and beyond.

Whether your child is taking their first steps into formal education, preparing for 11+, 13+ or 16+ entry, or moving into the UK system from overseas, we help you understand the options and plan the next stage with confidence.

Nursery 0–4

We help families prepare their children for their first steps into formal education. We take care to understand your family’s aspirations and preferences for your child’s early education. You may want a nursery within walking distance, somewhere with lots of outdoor learning, or a setting that offers additional activities such as ballet, swimming or music.

Whatever your criteria, Top School and Uni can guide you through the Early Years Foundation Stage, clarify the differences between different styles of learning, such as Montessori and Steiner, and create an education pathway that gives your child the best possible start.

Our consultants help families feel confident that their child’s early education fits both their immediate needs and their longer-term school plans.

Pre-prep 4–7

A pre-prep is often the gateway to prep school, offering a paid-for infant education from Reception to Year 2, and often with one or two nursery classes attached. Children usually attend from around age 3 to 7 before transferring into prep school.

The pre-prep curriculum in the UK overlaps with the final year of Early Years and Key Stage 1. For international families, the closest US comparison is often pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and early elementary years.

Top School and Uni helps families identify suitable pre-preps, understand the admissions process and make a final selection that supports both the child’s current needs and future school pathway.

Prep School 7–11/13

Prep schools are fee-paying junior schools designed to prepare children for entry into private senior schools. Pupils often begin in Year 3 and leave at the end of Year 6 for 11+ entry, or later for 13+ entry. Prep schools vary greatly in ethos, with some offering a traditional education and others providing a more liberal setting. They can be single-sex or co-educational, day or boarding, academically selective or broader in focus.

Which senior schools a prep school reliably feeds into can be important for families who want their child to attend one of the leading independent schools in the UK. Choosing the right prep school takes time, careful thought and a clear understanding of your child.

We take care to understand your family’s requirements and help you make an informed decision that is right for your child. Our aim is to help you find a prep school that suits them now and supports their future destination.

Senior School 11+/13+

Entry into senior school usually takes place at age 11 through the 11+ exams, particularly for many London girls’ day schools, or at 13+ when candidates may sit Common Entrance or school-specific assessments. Pupils typically join their senior school in Year 7 or Year 9 and remain until the end of Year 11 or Year 13. This stage is broadly equivalent to high school in the US system.

Senior school options in the UK are varied. Some are fiercely academic, while others offer broader subject choices, strong pastoral care, traditional values, modern facilities, outstanding sport, arts or co-curricular provision. The best choice is not always the most famous school, but the one where your child is most likely to flourish.

Top School and Uni helps families understand entrance routes, deadlines, interviews, assessments and school fit. We learn about your child’s interests, ambitions and academic profile, then recommend schools that give them the best chance of success and fulfilment.

Sixth Form and Beyond 16+

Sixth form entry can be an important moment for students who need a fresh start, a more academic environment, a stronger route to university, or a school that better supports their subject choices, ambitions and future plans.

Families may be comparing A Levels, IB, boarding sixth forms, London day schools, specialist academic settings, international schools or European options. This stage often connects directly to university strategy, so the right sixth form choice can make a real difference to the student’s next steps.

Whilst many of our families wish for their child to enter UK education, there is also increasing demand for research into European schools and wider international options. Several members of our team work with European boarding schools and international education routes, supporting students who are considering education beyond the UK.

schools and future planning

Future planning for families whose lives are not tied to one place

Many of the families we work with come to us at one particular moment in their child’s education, but our role is often much broader than solving the immediate question.

We help globally mobile families, home-educated students, world-schooled learners, young athletes, actors and children with complex education histories understand how UK schools will view their academic background, strengths, interests and next steps.

From there, we help families plan a longer-term educational flightpath, with clear options at each stage and a best-fit scenario for the child. This means that if your plans change later, whether because of relocation, a new opportunity, a change in school system or a shift in your child’s needs, you already understand how the pieces fit together and when to start preparing for the next decision.

We consider:

  • Academic expectations
  • Senior school destinations
  • Pastoral care and confidence
  • Traditional or progressive ethos
  • Day, weekly boarding or full boarding
  • Support for international families
  • The right fit for your child’s personality
